PayPal India layoffs as the company cuts around 600 jobs amid global restructuring

New Delhi, September 3, 2026: PayPal has reportedly laid off around 600 employees in India as the global payments company moves ahead with a broader restructuring programme aimed at reducing costs and simplifying its operations.

The job cuts reportedly affect employees across several functions, including technology, engineering, operations, payments and finance, with employees at PayPal’s offices in Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad among those impacted.

PayPal Cuts Around 600 Jobs

Around 10% of PayPal India Workforce Affected

PayPal has more than 6,000 employees in India, meaning the reported 600 job cuts represent roughly 10% of its Indian workforce.

According to reports, affected employees were informed about the layoffs on August 31. Some employees reportedly received termination calls followed by offboarding communications, while job-placement assistance and severance support were also discussed.

The reductions are spread across multiple business and technical functions rather than being limited to a single department.

Part of PayPal's Global Cost-Cutting Strategy

The layoffs in India come as part of a much larger restructuring effort at PayPal.

In April, PayPal announced a strategic reorganization designed to simplify decision-making, improve accountability and accelerate growth. The company moved toward a three-business operating structure covering Checkout Solutions & PayPal, Consumer Financial Services & Venmo, and Payment Services & Crypto.

The company's broader workforce-reduction plan is expected to reduce its global workforce by around 20% over the next two to three years, with a target of achieving at least $1.5 billion in gross run-rate savings during that period.

PayPal had approximately 23,800 employees globally at the end of 2025. A 20% reduction would represent roughly 4,760 positions if applied to that workforce level.

India Remains a Major PayPal Technology Hub

Despite the job cuts, India continues to play an important role in PayPal's global technology and operations network.

PayPal established its first development centre in Chennai in 2008. Its Indian technology operations support areas such as cloud infrastructure, distributed computing, artificial intelligence, data science, mobile experiences and payment technology.

The company also operates technology and innovation teams in Bengaluru, while its Hyderabad operations have supported areas including risk management, fraud prevention and data science. PayPal describes its India technology centres as its largest technology operations outside the United States.

Growing Pressure on India's Global Capability Centres

The PayPal layoffs come at a time when several multinational companies are restructuring their operations in India.

Global technology and financial-services companies have increasingly been focusing on cost efficiency, organizational simplification and automation, while also redirecting investment toward artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.

PayPal's decision therefore highlights a broader shift in the way multinational companies are managing large technology and operations centres. Rather than focusing solely on headcount expansion, companies are increasingly examining productivity, automation and the strategic importance of individual functions.

What the PayPal Layoffs Mean for India's Tech Sector

The reported layoffs could add to concerns surrounding employment in India's Global Capability Centre ecosystem, particularly for professionals working in mature technology and operations organizations.

At the same time, India's large pool of engineering, AI, data science and payments professionals continues to make the country strategically important for global technology companies.

For PayPal, the immediate objective appears to be creating a leaner organization while redirecting resources toward its key growth priorities.

The company has not publicly disclosed detailed information about the number of Indian employees affected by the latest restructuring. Moneycontrol reported that its queries to PayPal had not received a response at the time of publication.

Conclusion

PayPal's reported decision to cut around 600 jobs in India is another significant development in the global fintech and technology industry's ongoing restructuring cycle.

The layoffs reflect PayPal's broader effort to simplify its organization, reduce costs and improve operational efficiency. While the restructuring creates uncertainty for affected employees, India is expected to remain an important part of PayPal's global technology, payments and operations infrastructure.

As PayPal continues implementing its global restructuring strategy, further changes to its workforce and operating structure could emerge over the coming months.
