Alibaba raises $10.2 billion to accelerate AI ambitions through expanded AI infrastructure and technology investment

Alibaba Group is raising HK$80 billion ($10.2 billion) through a major share placement as the Chinese technology giant significantly increases its investment in artificial intelligence and AI infrastructure.

Alibaba is making one of its biggest financial commitments to artificial intelligence yet, raising approximately HK$80 billion ($10.2 billion) through a new share placement in Hong Kong. The company says the entire net proceeds will be used to strengthen its full-stack AI capabilities and expand its AI infrastructure.

The fundraising highlights how aggressively Alibaba is positioning itself for the next phase of the global AI race, as technology companies compete to build larger AI models, expand computing capacity and develop commercial AI applications.

$10.2 Billion Share Placement

Alibaba has priced the offering at HK$112.70 per share, with the company issuing approximately 710 million new shares to investors outside the United States. The transaction is expected to close on August 26, subject to customary conditions.

The newly issued shares represent roughly 3.7% of Alibaba's outstanding shares. The company intends to direct 100% of the net proceeds toward its AI strategy, including the expansion and enhancement of AI infrastructure.

The deal represents the largest-ever primary follow-on offering by a Hong Kong-listed company and ranks among the world's largest such share sales in 2026.

Alibaba Doubles Down on AI Infrastructure

The fundraising comes as Alibaba dramatically increases spending on computing power, chips, cloud infrastructure and AI model development.

The company's strategy goes beyond developing AI software. Its "full-stack" approach includes the infrastructure and computing resources needed to train and operate increasingly sophisticated AI models.

Alibaba has also been expanding its cloud infrastructure internationally. Alibaba Cloud recently launched its third data centre in South Korea, taking its network to 104 availability zones across 30 regions.

The company has previously committed to investing 380 billion yuan (about $56.5 billion) over three years in AI and cloud infrastructure.

Heavy AI Spending Hits Short-Term Profits

Alibaba's aggressive AI expansion is already having a significant impact on its financial results.

For the quarter ended June 2026, Alibaba's net profit fell by approximately 75% year over year to 10.5 billion yuan ($1.6 billion). At the same time, capital expenditure increased sharply as the company expanded computing capacity and invested heavily in AI infrastructure.

Despite the pressure on profits, Alibaba's revenue increased, while AI-related cloud and computing services continued to grow rapidly. Reuters reported that Alibaba's AI and cloud investments have also led the company to bring forward its expected payback period for those investments to around two and a half years.

Investors React With Caution

While Alibaba has attracted strong investor interest for the share placement, the fundraising also created concerns about shareholder dilution and the enormous cost of the company's AI strategy.

Alibaba's Hong Kong-listed shares fell sharply on August 24 following the completion of the placement. Reuters reported an early-session decline of around 8%, while other market reports indicated the stock briefly fell even further.

The reaction reflects a broader question facing major technology companies: How much should businesses spend today to secure a leading position in AI tomorrow?

For Alibaba, management appears willing to accept significant near-term financial pressure in exchange for building the infrastructure needed to compete in the long-term AI market.

A Bigger Battle for China's AI Market

Alibaba is competing in an increasingly crowded Chinese AI ecosystem that includes major technology companies, cloud providers and specialized AI startups.

The company's advantage comes from its combination of e-commerce, cloud computing, AI models and a large enterprise customer base. If Alibaba can successfully integrate AI across these businesses, the investment could create new revenue opportunities while strengthening its position in China's technology sector.

However, the scale of spending also increases the pressure on Alibaba to demonstrate that its AI investments can generate sustainable revenue and profits.

What Alibaba's AI Investment Means for the Global Tech Industry

Alibaba's latest fundraising is another sign that the AI race is shifting from simply developing powerful models to building the enormous infrastructure required to support them.

Data centres, advanced chips, cloud computing capacity and AI model development require billions of dollars in investment. Alibaba's decision to raise $10.2 billion specifically for these capabilities demonstrates the scale of resources major technology companies are prepared to commit.

The move could also intensify competition among global cloud and AI providers as companies race to secure computing capacity and establish leadership in AI services.

The Road Ahead

Alibaba's $10.2 billion fundraising marks a major step in its transformation from an e-commerce-focused technology company into a broader AI and cloud computing powerhouse.

The immediate challenge will be balancing enormous AI spending with shareholder expectations for profitability. If demand for AI services continues to grow, Alibaba could benefit from its early investment in infrastructure and computing capacity.

For now, the company's message is clear: Alibaba is betting heavily on artificial intelligence—and is willing to spend billions to compete for leadership in the next generation of technology.

Key Takeaway: Alibaba's HK$80 billion share placement gives the company significant additional capital to expand AI infrastructure and full-stack capabilities, but investors will closely watch whether these massive investments translate into sustainable growth and stronger profitability.
