Recent reports indicate that India could see 25,000–35,000 technology jobs eliminated during 2026, as traditional IT services face pressure from automation, changing client requirements and AI-led productivity improvements.


The latest disruption is also being felt at multinational technology companies operating in India. Oracle, for example, has been reported to be cutting around 3,000 jobs in India, while Microsoft has reportedly placed hundreds of employees on performance-improvement plans as companies adjust their workforce and skill requirements.


These developments suggest that the current wave is different from earlier technology layoffs. Companies are increasingly evaluating which roles can be automated, which functions can be handled by smaller teams and where new AI expertise is required.


Why AI Is Changing Technology Hiring

AI is becoming a larger part of corporate technology budgets, particularly in areas such as software development, customer support, data analysis, cybersecurity, cloud operations and business-process automation.

Employees whose roles involve repetitive processes may face greater pressure as automation expands. On the other hand, professionals who can work alongside AI or develop AI-powered systems could see stronger demand.

The latest job cuts should not necessarily be interpreted as the end of India's technology employment story.

Instead, they point toward a fundamental restructuring of the industry.


India continues to attract investment in AI, semiconductors, cloud infrastructure and advanced technology. Private-sector investment has also strengthened, with India's economy growing 7.8% in the April–June 2026 quarter and private-sector capital investment showing significant growth.


The challenge is ensuring that the workforce evolves at the same pace as technology.

Companies will need professionals capable of working with AI rather than competing against it, while employees will need to continuously update their skills.
